Workshop: Tones of colour for the black-and-white

In March 2023, a very special workshop took place in cooperation with the SK Stiftung Kultur. Under the direction of musician Gunda Gottschalk, two generations spent three days setting a silent film from the early days of cinema to music. Pupils from the Carl-von-Ossietzky school in Cologne and a group of adults aged 55+ used instruments, vocals and sound-producing objects to lend a film an acoustic dimension it previously never possessed.
Foley artists, as they are known (»bruiteurs« in French), reproduce everyday ambient sounds for films, and are essential to the film production process as sound can significantly change the meaning of an image. The workshop provided a playful setting for the group to experience how the magical power of sound can animate things and objectify people. At the same time, the workshop gave a real insight into the history of early cinema and its silent films.

The project was inspired by the French silent short film Cunégonde reçoit sa famille, which was part of a series of more than ten Cunégonde films with the main female character played by actress Little Chrysia.

A workshop by SK Stiftung Kultur and Internationales Frauen Film Fest Dortmund+Köln in cooperation with Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gesamtschule Cologne.

The result of the workshop will be performed during our award ceremony.
