»Faruk« at World Views Cologne

A man, lights reflecting on his body

We are presenting Faruk at World Views Cologne.

Aslı Özge’s hybrid of fiction and documentary celebrated its world premiere at the Berlinale in February 2024, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize for best film in the Panorama section. In April 2025, it was screened as part of the International Feature Film Competition at the IFFF Dortmund+Köln, though only in Dortmund. So it’s overdue that we show it in Cologne too.

The filmmaker asks: ‘How do places shape us?’
Filmed over seven years on location, Faruk tells the story of an elderly man whose plans to spend his twilight years in peace are thwarted by gentrification. The portrayal of Istanbul’s socio-cultural changes serves as the backdrop against which Aslı Özge explores the connections between people and their environment.

Understanding, openness and coming into contact with people of different nationalities and origins are our motives for the series World Views. Once a month, we show entertaining as well as thoughtful films from different countries to make the prism through which we see the world even more colourful.

People with and without an international history, women with refugee experience, their families and anyone interested in excellent, often rarely shown international films directed by women are warmly invited to the programme.
