For Silvia Federici, current resistance to the destructive forces of turbo-capitalism is part of an ongoing revolt against the enclosure of communal land and social relations. In Europe, land privatisation began in the late 15th century, coinciding with colonial expansion. In her groundbreaking work Caliban and the Witch, Federici examines the history of women during the transition from feudalism to capitalism. She interprets the three-century-long witch hunts as an unprecedented war against women, which claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands. Women’s power had to be broken for capitalism to flourish.
Heavily affected by displacement and environmental destruction, women continue to play a central role in struggles over the commons today. How can we create new forms of social cooperation that include our natural environment?
According to Federici, commoning is an essential part of our lives that no one force can destroy, because it is constantly recreated as a condition of our existence. Athina Rachel Tsangari has also addressed the commons thematically in her films (Harvest 2024) and in her filmmaking practice, has consistently worked in collectives.

Silvia Federici (geb. 1942) ist feministische Aktivistin, Autorin und war bis 2005 an der Hofstra University in Hempstead Professorin für politische Philosophie und International Studies. 1967 zog sie zum PhD-Studium in Philosophie von Italien in die USA. 1972 war sie Gründungsmitglied des International Feminist Collective, mit dem sie die internationale Kampagne Wages for Housework (Lohn für Hausarbeit) initiierte. Sie forschte in Nigeria und lehrte an der University of Port Harcourt. Jahrzehntelang arbeitete sie zusammen mit einer Vielzahl internationaler feministischer Organisationen wie Women in Nigeria und Ni una menos in Lateinamerika. Sie war Mitglied des Midnight Notes Collective. In ihrem bekanntesten Werk Caliban und die Hexe – Frauen, der Körper und die ursprüngliche Akkumulation (2004) griff Silvia Federici die Positionen von Karl Marx und Michel Foucault kritisch auf und dachte sie feministisch weiter. Sie veröffentlichte zahlreiche Bücher und Essays zu marxistischen und feministischen Theorien, zum weltweiten Widerstand gegen die kapitalistische Globalisierung und über die Macht von Gemeinschaften. Sie lebt und arbeitet in New York City.

Die Filmemacherin und Produzentin Athina Rachel Tsangari gilt als zentrale Protagonistin des jungen griechischen Kinos. Sie studierte Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft, Philosophie und Theater an der Aristotle University in Thessaloniki. Zudem absolvierte sie ein Masterstudium in Performance Studies an der New York University und ein Filmstudium an der University of Texas. Den Einstieg ins Kino fand sie durch eine Rolle in Richard Linklaters legendärem Film Slackers. The Slow Business of Going war ihr Abschlussfilm. Sie produzierte Filme wie Richard Linklaters Before Midnight oder Yorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth. Letzterer war Produzent ihres gefeierten Spielfilms Attenberg, der den Spielfilmpreis 2010 beim IFFF Dortmund+Köln gewann. In diesem Jahr Jahr ist Athina Rachel Tsangari Teil der Jury für den Internationalen Spielfilmwettbewerb des IFFF Dortmund+Köln.
