In 1972, Massina, Moriaty and di Maggio volunteer to work on board a French marine vessel. It sets sail for the Pacific Mururoa Atoll, where atomic tests are to be carried out. The three men are inexperienced, and are aware of neither the personal risks in this operation, nor of the dramatic consequences for the planet. In an environment characterised by violence and discipline, boredom, loneliness and despair, the elder Moriaty makes friends with slightly childish Massina. A relationship of silent trust unfolds between them. Marion Hänsel adapted two autobiographical short stories for the script by Hubert Mignarelli, who joined the French Navy and volunteered to be posted to the Mururoa Atoll.

Die belgische Regisseurin und Produzentin Marion Hänsel wurde 1949 in Marseille geboren und wuchs in Antwerpen auf. Nach ihrer Schauspielausbildung in Brüssel, New York und Paris gründete sie 1977 ihre eigene Produktionsfirma (Man’s Films), um ihren ersten Kurzfilm zu realisieren. Ihr zweiter Langspielfilm Im Herzen des Landes (Dust) wurde 1985 mit einem Silbernen Löwen in Venedig ausgezeichnet; Das Geheimnis des Dirigenten (Il maestro) gewann 1990 den Publikumspreis in San Sebastian. Als der Wind den Sand berührte (Si le vent soulève les sables) war weltweit auf über fünfzig Festivals vertreten und erhielt fünfzehn Preise. Neben ihrer Arbeit als Regisseurin war Hänsel als Produzentin bereits an über dreißig Produktionen beteiligt.
