November 9th: »Something Must Break« at »ifs-Begegnung« Gender & Diversity

In our joint series »ifs Begegnung« Gender & Diversity we show the Swedish feature film Something Must Break by Ester Martin Bergsmark.
Bergsmark’s debut was based on the novel You Are the Roots that Sleep Beneath My Feet and Hold the Earth in Place by co-author Eli Levén: androgynous Sebastian and heterosexual Andreas love each other. They are inseparable and together they rebel against the rest of the smoothly polished Swedish IKEA society! They want to escape boredom and definitely not become like everyone else. And then there is Ellie – the superwoman who is maturing inside Sebastian and whom Andreas both loves and fears.

Something Must Break won the Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam – IFFR, and Bergsmark received the Mai Zetterling Fellowship at the Gothenburg International Film Festival.

To stimulate discussion in the cultural sector and at film schools on the topic of gender and diversity, the joint series of the ifs internationale filmschule köln and the IFFF Dortmund+Köln regularly shows selected feature films and documentaries as well as experimental works and introduces their makers in a subsequent discussion.

The evening was curated and will be moderated by Marcel-Jana Urban and Beverly Stura-Cura (Netzwerk queer@filmschule, ifs internationale filmschule köln).
