7 September: »Petra Kelly – ACT NOW!« at LETsDOK
We will be showing the new documentary film by the great team of Doris Metz (director) and Sophie Maintigneux (cinematographer) on Saturday, 7 September 2024 as part of LETsDOK 2024. The film comes at the right time in these politically turbulent and disturbing times. You have the opportunity to experience Petra Kelly – ACT NOW! and its makers even before the nationwide cinema release.
Opinionated, internationally networked, unstoppable – that was Petra Kelly, founder, party and parliamentary group spokesperson for the Greens, is shown in a new light in this film portrait. How do Petra Kelly’s actions still have an impact today? What is her political legacy? How did she deal with misogynistic hostility and how does this influence a young generation of women in politics? The tireless commitment of a ‘political animal’ – who learnt her craft from Robert Kennedy as well as from her grandmother ‘Omi’ – to global issues from the international peace and anti-nuclear movements to support for the Lakota was forward-looking, if not visionary.
Never-before-seen archive images and memories of close friends and companions are on display. Among others, half-brother John Kelly, friend and US peace activist Cora Weiss, climate protection activist Luisa Neubauer and companions Lukas Beckmann and Otto Schily have their say. Doris Metz masterfully draws a red thread through the wealth of material and in her documentary film paints a portrait of this charismatic politician and icon of the German peace and environmental movement, whose behaviour and visions are once again inspiring a young generation.
