14 September: Award-winning Haitian feature film FREDA screens at the »ifs encounter« Gender & Diversity

With her feature film debut Freda, actress and director Gessica Généus placed Haiti on the international film festival map. Généus takes an unsentimental look at how women in particular suffer from the economic downturn, social and political ills, cultural repression and racism in the patriarchal Haitian society. The story of the two dissimilar sisters Freda and Géraldine also tells the story of two opposite lives in a society shaped by colonialism.

A film about the power-critical struggles of a young generation in the first post-colonial independent state of Haiti. In 2022, Freda was awarded Best Debut Feature Film by the IFFF Dortmund+Cologne.
