The teacher Antek Liebmann moves to northern France in summer. After a harrowing experience had thrown him off the rails, he wants to bury the ghosts of his past there. All goes well at first.\u00a0 He flirts with a female neighbour and starts an affair with the young Sebastien. But the nightmares soon catch up with him again. Meanwhile, in the surrounding woods, a killer is said to be on the loose. While out walking one day, he makes a dangerous discovery in the undergrowth. Airy summer days elide into night-time crashes. The possibility of a love affair helps him to take things slower, to come to terms with his past and to dare a new beginning.
\nBased on a 27-page outline plot, Liebmann<\/strong> was in the can after just fifteen days of shooting. The story of guilt and responsibility is peppered with associative interpolations and tricks of colour and form that all go to express the fragmented and mysterious feelings of the neurotic main character. In Godehard Giese as Liebmann, Jules Herrmann has found a brilliant performer.
