\u00bbDresden, circa 1910\u201311. Lying naked on a divan in the studio of painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner is \u203aMilli\u2039. The artist delights in capturing her outlines. The result is the painting \u203aSchlafende Milli\u2039 (Sleeping Milli, 1911). Kirchner\u2019s eroticizing and exoticizing view of his model is all that remains of \u203aMilli\u2039 (if that really was her name). \u203aMilli\u2039 is silent, but the painting speaks volumes about how black women have been reduced to anonymous objects of desire. It is one instance in a centuries-long history of black people in Germany.\u00ab

Natasha A. Kelly takes up the theme of black women seen through the white male gaze and, in an act of self-empowerment, gives a voice to other women \u2013 representing, so to speak, \u00bbMilli\u00ab. In this film, eight Afro-German women of different generations, drawing on the portrait of a woman whose story is still unknown, assume the role of active narrators. Based on key experiences from their own biographies and their artistic work in Germany, the activists and artists relate the numerous forms of racism which they have each had to endure in the past and still endure today.
\n\u00bbThe black woman as one of the lowest links in the chain […]. She is everything, she bears everything, she can do everything; she is there for you and all your needs,\u00ab recites Macir\u00e9 Bakayoko in her lyrical text in front of that same Kirchner painting, thereby shifting her position from objectified female to artistic and political actor.
