\u00bbMost children come out of their mother\u2018s belly\u00ab, says the eight-yearsold Koos, \u00bbI come out of an aeroplane.\u00ab Yes, Koos comes from Peru and as a baby was adopted by a Dutch couple. He gets on very well with them, his grandfather is always there when needed, he is loved and he has a neighbourhood friend called Isa. However, when his adoptive mother becomes pregnant, he worries that his parents will now only care about their \u00bbown\u00ab baby. Indeed, Koos seems to be a bit of a worrier all-round: he\u2018s particularly afraid of water. Then one day, outside the supermarket, he meets Illari and his extended family who earn their money as Peruvian musicans busking in the High Street. They practice their Indian rituals on an island and soon Koos learns that he is a descendent of\u00a0 the brave Incas! Even his parents can accept his interest in everything to do with the Indio culture, no longer having to dismiss it as \u00bbIndian nonsense\u00ab. And finally, they tell him that his original name means \u00bbwater\u00ab. Koos is delighted that he bears a name that is the combination of his Indian name Yaku and that of his Dutch father Jaap (which is actually Jacobus, hence Koos).
\nSensitively, realistically and with humour, Ineke Houtman tells this interesting story about an adopted child\u2018s search for his roots from the boy\u2018s perspective, using a simple plot to underline just how important it is to know your own identity.<\/p>\n
