Don\u2019t forget the unforgettable \u2013 this is the urgent appeal of the politically charged works of Korean composer Cecilia Kim. In her series Remember the Remembering<\/em>, the artist promotes the remembrance of all those women who have been subjected to repression, war and discrimination in her home country. Six pieces are performed, all of them inspired by historical events \u2013 from the Japanese invasion of Korea to the workers\u2019 movement in the 1980s.<\/p>\n Interpreted by a string quartet, percussion and clarinet with Pansori vocals, the music is calm and minimalist, almost \u00bbnaked\u00ab. In a dignified and subtle way, it leaves scope for the superimposed images which depict surviving female victims and soldiers going to war. Personal recollections also flow acoustically into Kim\u2019s compositions in the form of poems written by war victims or interviews with the few surviving \u00bbcomfort women\u00ab, who were forced into prostitution during World War Two, and who are now given the chance to speak. \nIf we consider that the war crimes committed against over 200,000 Korean and Chinese women have never been acknowledged as such by the governments, the appeal formulated in the series\u2019 title becomes all the more urgent. It is physically tangible in the powerful and trance-like percussion performance, inspired by shamanic rituals, while flame-like beings dart across the screen.<\/p>\n
